The Abbey of Montecassino

This monastery was founded by St. Benedict in 529 AD. It is renowned on a worldwide level for holiness, culture and art. Throughout the years, it has been destroyed by earthquakes, invaders and wars. It symbolizes an old oak, which although broken by the storm, always becomes green and alive again, stronger than ever: succisa virescit.
